My Website Is Down… A Surprisingly Simple Guide to Domains, DNS, and Hosting

6 March, 2026

It usually starts like this:

“Hi… my website isn’t loading.”
“Okay — do you know who hosts it?”
“Umm… I think… Google?”
“And where is your domain registered?”
“…what’s a domain?”

What Is a Domain Name? (Your Website’s Address)

If this sounds familiar — don’t worry. You’re in very good company. Almost no one wakes up thinking, “Today feels like a great day to learn about DNS.” And yet, every website depends on a few invisible pieces working together behind the scenes.

So let’s explain them once, and then you can happily forget about them again.

Your domain is your website’s name — like yourbusiness.ca. You buy that name from a domain registrar. Think of it as a name store. Once you’ve bought the name, no one else can use it, as long as you renew it each year.

Important (and slightly surprising) fact: buying the name does not mean you bought a website. It’s like registering a business name — helpful, necessary, but it doesn’t magically build the building.

Typical cost: about $20–$40 per year
That part is simple.

What Is DNS and Why It Matters More Than You Think

Now you own the name. Great. But when someone types it into their browser… how does the internet know where to go? That’s where DNS comes in. DNS is basically a set of directions. It tells the internet: “When someone asks for this name, send them here.”

DNS doesn’t show the website. It doesn’t store the website. It just points traffic to the right place — quietly, instantly, every time. When DNS breaks, nothing works. When DNS works, no one notices. Which is exactly how it should be.

Most DNS services are free, and at Roddis Communications, we often use Cloudflare to add extra security and protection behind the scenes.

What Is Website Hosting? (Where Your Website Actually Lives)

This is the part most people think they bought when they bought the domain.

Website hosting is the place where your website lives. If your domain is the name and DNS is the directions, hosting is the house. No house = no website to visit.

Your website files live on a secure server, and when someone visits your site, that server shows them the pages, images, and content.

So… what does hosting with Roddis Communications actually mean?

This is where things get easier for our clients.

When your website is hosted with Roddis Communications, you’re not just renting space. You’re handing off the stuff you don’t want to think about.

Here’s what’s quietly happening in the background:

  • Your website lives on a secure server shared only with other Roddis client sites
  • We take daily backups, kept for three months
  • If something breaks, gets hacked, or goes sideways — we can restore it
  • Your site has an SSL certificate (the little lock in the browser)
  • We use Cloudflare protection for extra security and stability
  • We monitor your site and apply security updates quickly
  • We handle regular maintenance updates so small issues don’t become big ones

In other words: your website is watched, protected, and kept healthy — even when you’re busy doing literally anything else.

“But what if I need to change something?”

Good question. Websites aren’t static. As part of our hosting & care plan:

  • Small content updates are included (like adding a team member, updating text, or posting a blog)
  • If you have a question or something feels off, you can email us and ask
  • We’re happy to help you understand how things work without making you feel silly for asking

Larger changes — new pages, new features, design changes — are quoted separately so everything stays clear and fair. No surprises. No mystery invoices.

A quick note on what hosting doesn’t include (on purpose)

To keep things simple and affordable:

  • We don’t provide email hosting (but we’ll happily recommend good providers)
  • We don’t take ownership of your domain — it stays yours
  • Advanced or custom technical work is handled separately, with approval first

This way, you always stay in control of your digital assets, and you only pay for what you need.

The Simple Version (If You Skipped Everything Above)

  • You buy the name.
  • DNS tells the internet where it goes.
  • Hosting is where the website lives.

And Roddis Communications?

We make sure the house is secure, standing, backed up, and not quietly falling apart while no one’s looking. If you’ve ever wondered “Who even handles this stuff?” — now you know.

And if you’d rather never think about it again, that’s kind of the point.
